Spain Win World Cup as Burn to Glory Campaign Removes 8M Fan Tokens™ 

Spain are world champions for the second time after beating Argentina 1-0 in the World Cup final, triggering the largest Fan Token™ burn of the tournament and bringing Chiliz’ Burn to Glory campaign to a fitting end.

Ferran Torres scored the only goal in the 106th minute at the New York New Jersey Stadium, breaking Argentina’s resistance and ending their attempt to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to retain the trophy. 

The result also activated a burn equivalent to 10% of the remaining Spain Fan Token™ ($SPAIN) treasury reserve. A total of 1.9M $SPAIN tokens will now be permanently removed from the token’s supply, taking Spain’s cumulative tournament burn to approximately 6.38M tokens.

Across all six participating National Team Fan Tokens™, Burn to Glory is set to close with approximately 8.09 million tokens removed from treasury reserves following 21 match wins.

How Did Spain Beat Argentina in the World Cup Final? 

The first all-Fan Token™ World Cup final was decided by a substitute after 105 goalless minutes in New Jersey. 

Spain controlled the match and restricted Argentina to no attempts during the regulation 90 minutes, but Emiliano Martínez repeatedly stood between Spain and the opening goal. 

The breakthrough finally came one minute into the second period of extra time when Nico Williams found Torres, who beat Martínez with a first-time finish. 

Argentina, reduced to ten men following Enzo Fernández’s dismissal, could not find a response. Lionel Messi’s third World Cup final therefore ended in defeat, while Spain added the trophy to the European title won under Luis de la Fuente in 2024. 

It is Spain’s second world title and their first since 2010. It also completes a run of seven consecutive victories following their goalless opening draw against Cape Verde. 

The match was the second major football final in 2026 contested exclusively by Fan Token™ teams, following Paris Saint-Germain’s victory over Arsenal in the Champions League final. 

This time, both finalists were part of the same results-linked burn campaign, guaranteeing that the trophy decider would change the supply of one of their digital assets. 

How Much $SPAIN Has Been Burned?

Spain reached the final with approximately 4.39M $SPAIN already burned across six victories from seven games.

The final raised the burn rate to its tournament maximum of 10%, resulting in another 1.9M $SPAIN being earmarked for permanent removal from the treasury. Once completed, Spain’s seven burns will have removed approximately 6.38 million tokens in total. 

That makes $SPAIN the clear leader of the Burn to Glory table as well as the World Cup winner. The numerical total is considerably larger than that of the Argentine Football Association fan Token ($ARG).

This is because $SPAIN is a newer Fan Token™ and began the campaign with a much larger treasury reserve. The same burn percentage can therefore produce very different burn amounts for different tokens. 

No tokens are taken from supporters’ wallets: every Burn to Glory transaction is funded from treasury holdings, lowering the total supply while leaving individual Fan Token™ balances untouched. 

Which National Team Fan Tokens™ Were Burned? 

Spain, Argentina, Belgium, Portugal, Scotland and South Africa all triggered at least one burn during the tournament.

Spain and Argentina carried the campaign all the way to its final night. Belgium produced three burns before losing to Spain in the quarter-finals, Portugal recorded two before falling to the same opponents in the last 16, while Scotland and South Africa each registered one group-stage win.

Door Closes on 2026 World Cup

The 2026 World Cup will be remembered for a variety of reasons. It is, after all, the last tournament that Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo will ever play in (right?). It will be remembered for creating social media stars out of previously unknown goalkeepers, and for water breaks.

The campaign also produced a more permanent connection between sport and the blockchain. Match reports, highlight reels and history books will record Torres’ goal and Spain’s second world title. The supply reductions triggered along the way will remain visible on-chain.
