Red-Hot Messi Makes History and Triggers $ARG Token Burn

A sensational Lionel Messi hat-trick saw Argentina win their first 2026 World Cup group match against Algeria on June 16, as the mercurial Argentinian equalled Miroslav Klose’s record for the most goals scored (16) in World Cup finals.
Additionally, Argentina’s win triggered the first Argentine Football Association Fan Token™ ($ARG) burn, as a total of 13,426 $ARG were permanently removed from the circulating supply.
$ARG Price Action
In the 24 hours leading up to the match, the valuation of the Argentina Fan Token increased by 12.4%, as the Argentine Football Association Fan Token™ ($ARG) price climbed from $0.257 up to $0.289.

The expectation of an Argentina win appeared to be baked into that price, however, as the token’s surge peaked just prior to kick-off.
The sell-off began around the same time as the match itself as traders sought to take profits on what they correctly assumed was a sure-fire win. By the morning of the next day, the $ARG valuation had dropped back down to the $0.25 range.
A total of 13,426 $ARG tokens were permanently removed from the circulating supply after the match, as part of the new feature that sees tokens burned if a team wins.
Notably, $ARG has been the most-traded International Fan Token™ in recent months, regularly recording between $2-4 million in trade volume per day, consistently, for most of the last quarter.
This could be attributed in part to the fact that most of the $ARG token supply is already in circulation. It can also be attributed in part to the fact that Lionel Messi is still, at the age of 38, one of football’s most recognizable figures, and never fails to draw attention, whether on the pitch or in the Fan Token™ markets.
Interesting to note: the International Fan Token™ with the second-highest trade volume at this early stage of the World Cup is Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal ($POR). This lends credence to the idea that individual figures, rather than teams, are what draw attention and drive sentiment, at least at this early stage of the tournament.
Messi Breaks Records
Records are made to be broken, and Lionel Messi appears to have taken that sentiment to heart.
The man considered by many to be the best player in the world made his record 27th World Cup match appearance, matched Miroslav Klose’s goal-scoring record, drew equal with the same player’s record for the most game wins, and is just one set-up away from breaking Diego Maradona’s assist record for Argentina at the World Cup.
Argentina entered the competition as outside prospects to defend their 2022 World Cup, coming in behind Spain, England and France as outright favourites. After this demonstration of form and vigour from Messi, the defending champion’s prospects will no doubt have increased.
