How Atlético Madrid ($ATM) vs Barcelona ($BAR) Played Out On-Chain

Last night, despite losing 2-1 to Barcelona in the Spanish capital, Atlético Madrid qualified for the Champions League semifinal and the Fan Token market was quick to react.
Thanks to their excellent 2-0 win at the Nou Camp last week, and some resolute defending at their own ground in the return leg, Atlético claimed a deserved 3-2 aggregate win to make the last-four for the first time since 2017.
Here’s how Atlético Madrid vs Barcelona played out on the pitch and on the blockchain.
Goals Move Markets: A Breakdown of $ATM vs $BAR
As mentioned in our preview yesterday, Polymarket made Barcelona favourites to win the match, but overcoming a two-goal deficit would be more challenging given the defensive qualities of Diego Simeone’s team.
Barcelona rose to that challenge with aplomb: Lamine Yamal finished a lovely move inside five minutes, slotting the ball through the keeper’s legs to slash the deficit. Then, on 24 minutes, Ferran Torres smashed the ball into the top corner to level the tie on aggregate.
Unsurprisingly, the two quick-fire goals turned Barcelona Fan Token ($BAR) sentiment positive: its spot price quickly rose from $0.551 prematch to $0.579, a jump of 5%. By the same token, the Atlético Madrid Fan Token ($ATM) shed 5.1%.
$BAR’s climb may have continued but the Catalans weren’t given a chance to build up a head of steam. Seven minutes after Torres’ goal, an inch-perfect cross from a marauding Marcos Llorente found Ademola Lookman who coolly hit the net. Atlético were back in front.

Given the blistering start, few would have expected the match to stay at 2-1 given there were 60 minutes left on the clock (and nearer 70 when you count eight minutes of injury time). Yet, it did. Barcelona piled on the pressure, Atlético soaked it up and even had a few goalscoring opportunities. Just like last week, Barça were reduced to ten men when Eric Garcia received red for tripping Atléti striker Alexander Sørloth as he broke away.
Although they lost the match 2-1, Atlético Madrid knocked Barcelona out of the UCL, just as they had eliminated them from the Copa del Rey. From falling to $1.1 after conceding two early goals, $ATM surged to $1.3, posting gains of 18.1%.
$BAR, on the other hand, fell from $0.579 after going 2-0 up to $0.522 post-match, a drop of 9.8%.

Trade Volumes Through the Roof
Naturally enough, trade volumes for both Fan Tokens surged as the match approached and remained strong during the game and in its aftermath.
$ATM volume peaked at $10.3M the morning after the match, while $BAR volume reached $9.3M shortly after midnight.
Atlético will now meet either Arsenal or Sporting CP in the UCL semis, as they bid to reach the final on the ten-year anniversary of their last appearance there. Barcelona, meanwhile, must focus on league duties where they hold a commanding nine-point lead at the La Liga summit.
