Belgium Qualify for Last 16 After Thrilling World Cup Comeback

Belgium qualified for the last 16 of the 2026 World Cup after coming from two goals down to beat Senegal 3-2 after extra time on Wednesday, July 1.
Belgium are one of only two teams to have ever battled from two goals down to win a game at a World Cup finals.
The dramatic victory against Senegal extends one final chance to the ageing group of players dubbed Belgium’s “Golden Generation,” made up of the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne, who will likely never appear at another World Cup as a team.
Belgium vs Senegal Match Summary
Belgium conceded in the 24th and 51st minute, losing goals to Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr as Senegal took an early lead.
It looked like Senegal were destined to win the match and qualify for the next round right up until the 86th minute, when half-time substitute Lukaku pulled one back for Belgium. Three minutes later, Youri Tielemans scored to draw level and take the game into extra time.

It took the full thirty minutes of extra time plus an extra five minutes on top for the deadlock to be broken. Belgium were awarded a penalty in the very last minute of the match (120+5’) and Tielemans scored his second of the night to secure Belgium’s qualification for the last 16.
Belgium Look to Progress vs USA
Belgium have a rich history at World Cup competitions, qualifying for 15 tournaments in all, and finishing 3rd in 2018.
While the likes of France, Argentina, England and Spain are deemed likely favourites to win the tournament, Belgium are considered among the outsiders to go all the way.
The team’s first two group games ended in draws before Belgium grabbed a 5-1 win in their final tie against New Zealand. After coming from behind against Senegal, the question arises as to how much longer the Red Devils can continue to squeeze past the post at the last possible minute.
Win Triggers 2% $BELG Burn
Chiliz’ Burn to Glory campaign sees a percentage of a country’s Fan Token™ supply permanently burned for every match the team wins, and after the dramatic victory over Senegal, 2% of Belgium Fan Token™ ($BELG) treasury holdings have been destroyed.
The total number of $BELG tokens to burn after the round-of-32 win was 318,265, reducing the treasury supply from 15.91M to 15.59M.

Belgium will now look ahead to their round-of-16 match against the USA, who defeated Bosnia-Herzegovina 2-0. Chiliz’ Burn to Glory campaign sets up a potential token burn of 2.5% of $BELG treasury reserves if Belgium beat the co-hosts.
A subsequent quarterfinal win would cause 5% of treasury reserves to be burned, while a semifinal win would trigger 7.5%, and a final win 10%.
