Argentina Survive Swiss Scare as Extra-Time Win Triggers Biggest $ARG Burn Yet

Argentina are through to the World Cup semi-finals after surviving a major scare against Switzerland, winning 3-1 after extra time in Kansas City and triggering the largest Argentina AFA Fan Token™ ($ARG) burn of the tournament so far.
With a perfect record of token burns after winning all of their World Cup games, Argentina are emerging as true World Cup contenders alongside the remaining semi-finalists of Spain, France and England.
Argentina vs Switzerland Match Report
Alexis Mac Allister opened the scoring after just ten minutes, directing Lionel Messi’s corner beyond Gregor Kobel with a clever near-post header. Switzerland responded strongly after the break, however, and Dan Ndoye drew them level in the 67th minute after combining with Ricardo Rodriguez before finishing through Emiliano Martínez’s legs.
The momentum appeared to be with Switzerland, but the match changed five minutes later when Breel Embolo received a second yellow card for simulation following a lengthy VAR review. The Swiss striker’s dismissal left Murat Yakin’s side attempting to protect the draw with ten men for the remainder of normal time and throughout extra time.

Switzerland held firm until the 112th minute, when Julián Álvarez finally broke their resistance with a superb long-range strike into the top corner. Lautaro Martínez added a third in the 121st minute, converting the rebound after Kobel had saved Thiago Almada’s initial effort.
The victory sends Argentina into a semi-final against England and keeps alive their attempt to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to retain the World Cup. It also means Lionel Messi will face England at a World Cup for the first time in his career, in what is bound to be a huge occasion off the pitch as well as on it.
Argentina’s Biggest $ARG Burn Yet
Argentina’s quarter-final victory activated the sixth consecutive $ARG burn of the Burn to Glory campaign.
Under the campaign’s escalating structure, group-stage victories triggered burns equivalent to 1% of the participating token’s treasury reserves, followed by 2% in the round of 32 and 2.5% in the round of 16. The quarter-final victory over Switzerland raised the burn rate to 5%, making this Argentina’s largest single burn of the tournament so far.
Following the win over Switzerland, a total of 62,240 tokens were permanently removed from the $ARG supply, meaning 160,090 $ARG tokens have now been burned throughout the duration of the World Cup.
The tokens are not taken from the balances of individual holders. Instead, they are removed from treasury holdings, reducing the supply base and increasing the proportional share represented by tokens already held by fans.
England Await as Burn Rate Climbs Again
Argentina have rarely made easy work of their progress in the World Cup thus far. They edged Cape Verde 3-2 in the round of 32, recovered from two goals down to beat Egypt by the same scoreline, and needed extra time to overcome ten-man Switzerland.
Yet the holders remain standing, and the potential on-chain stakes continue to rise alongside the sporting ones.
A semi-final victory over England would activate a burn equivalent to 7.5% of the remaining $ARG treasury reserves. Should Argentina reach the final and successfully defend their title, another 10% would be removed.
Messi and Argentina are now two victories away from history. For $ARG holders, they are also two victories away from the largest burns of the entire campaign.
