Serie A Review: Fan Tokens React as Napoli Go Top

Football fans have found it impossible to tear their eyes from Serie A this season, with precious few points separating the contenders clustered at the business end of the league table.

This past weekend saw another round of fascinating fixtures, with numerous Fan Token title contenders in action, among them Napoli ($NAP), Roma ($ASR), Juventus ($JUV), Inter Milan ($INTER), and Bologna ($BFC). Third-placed AC Milan ($ACM), meanwhile, could replace Napoli at the top if they maintain their recent league form (12 games unbeaten) by winning away at Torino tonight.

Let’s dive into the weekend’s Italian football action and see how the top Fan Tokens reacted to the results.

Napoli ($NAP) 2-1 Juventus ($JUV)

The biggest Serie A showdown of the weekend was undoubtedly between Italian giants Napoli and Juventus on Sunday evening (Dec. 7), which Napoli won 2-1 courtesy of a Rasmus Højlund double.

The win put the reigning Serie A champions in pole position in the league table, one point ahead of Inter Milan, while Juventus – who had been unbeaten in eight games prior to Sunday – dropped to seventh. Napoli have emerged from a malaise in recent weeks, having defeated title rivals Roma in the capital in their last Serie A game.

Unsurprisingly, the victory made the Napoli Fan Token ($NAP) one of the weekend’s biggest winners: in the hours after full-time, the token’s value rose by 10% while trade volume surged 620%. From $0.378 prior to the game, it is now sitting at $0.404 a day after the match, holding on to gains of 6.8%.

With Juventus’ title hopes dented (they are now eight points adrift of Napoli), one might have expected the Juventus Fan Token ($JUV) to shed more value than it has, yet it’s lost less than 1% in the last 24 hours, and is still up 4.7% over the last seven days.

Inter Milan ($INTER) 4-0 Como

Inter Milan left little doubt about their title credentials by comfortably dispatching Como 4-0 at the San Siro. Lisandro Martinez opened the scoring before Marcus Thuram, Hakan Calhanoglu and Carlos Augusto got in on the act, Cesc Fàbregas’ in-form Como side having no answer to the blitzkrieg.

The win means Inter sit just one point behind Napoli, although they could be overtaken by city rivals AC if the latter beat Torino tonight. Fourth-placed Roma’s shock defeat to Cagliari (see below) was welcomed by Inter though, as there is now a three-point gap between the teams.

The Inter Milan Fan Token ($INTER) has trended upwards since the start of the month and rose from $0.33 on the morning of the Como game to $0.34 in the aftermath, an increase of 3%. As for trade volume, it exploded from $293,000 on the morning of the match to $904,000 after full-time, a jump of 208%.

Cagliari 1-0 Roma ($ASR)

It’s been a week to forget for Roma, who failed to score in 180 minutes of football against Cagliari and Napoli, going down 1-0 on each occasion. While last week’s loss to Napoli could be forgiven, Cagliari are toiling in the lower half of the table and Roma would have expected better of themselves.

Now sitting fourth, Roma are two points above Bologna and four behind table-toppers Napoli, meaning there’s no reason for panic. Traders seem to be of the same mind: despite yesterday’s defeat, the AS Roma Fan Token ($ASR) is only down 0.78% in the last 24 hours. Trade volume also remains high, having at one stage hit $2.9 million.

Lazio ($LAZIO) 1-1 Bologna ($BFC)

Another Fan Token feud at the weekend saw Lazio and Bologna come away with a point after a 1-1 stalemate. For Bologna, the dropped points mean they failed to capitalize on Roma’s defeat and move into fourth place. Lazio are down in tenth having won just one of their last four games.

As for the Lazio Fan Token ($LAZIO), despite poor league form it remains the top Serie A fan token by market cap. Value-wise, it’s up 2.16% over the last 24 hours and although trade volumes have fallen since the final whistle, they surpassed 3 million on matchday.

The Bologna Fan Token ($BFC), meanwhile, remains just inside the top 50 fan tokens by market cap. Next weekend’s home match against Juventus will reveal more about the club’s title credentials.

In addition to Torino vs AC Milan, the Serie A Monday night games include Pisa vs Parma ($PARMA) and Udinese ($UDI) vs Genoa.
