How Italy’s World Cup Playoff Defeat Sent $ITA Fan Token Tumbling

Italy’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup was reflected on-chain, as the value of the national side’s Fan Token nosedived in the aftermath of the penalty defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Over the last 24 hours, the value of the Italian National Team Fan Token ($ITA) sunk like a stone, shedding 34% per Socios.com. The seven-day picture is even worse, with the token sliding 44.8% in that time.
As disappointing as the result would have been to Italy fans and $ITA holders, it underlines a core tenet of SportFi: what happens on pitch soon reverberates on-chain.
Death of a Dream: Italy Crash Out, $ITA Crashes
Last Thursday, Italy looked favourites to qualify for this summer’s showpiece. All they had to do was defeat Northern Ireland in Bergamo then see off the winner of Bosnia and Herzegovina vs Wales.
Ahead of the former match, we speculated whether a playoff win could boost the flagging Italian National Team Fan Token ($ITA), but despite the 2-0 victory, $ITA actually slid after full-time.
Last night’s do-or-die match against Bosnia and Herzegovina (Mar. 31) in Zenica was a chance to resurrect Italian sporting pride as well as the $ITA token, which had cautiously traded sideways in the lead-up. Instead, the four-time champions became the first previous winners to miss three consecutive World Cups.
Penalty misses from Pio Esposito and Bryan Cristante sealed Italy’s fate after the match finished 1-1 in regular time, with Alessandro Bastoni’s first-half red card making his team-mates’ mission more arduous.
Given a spot at the World Cup was at stake, it’s unsurprising $ITA has nosedived so spectacularly in the game’s aftermath, its 24-hr and 7-day results the worst in the entire SportFi market.

Trade volume for $ITA has rocketed, from $201,789 yesterday to $2.9 million at the time of writing (+1,337%). Although the token’s value has declined significantly, the bleeding was mostly confined to the post-match hours. Since early the next morning (Apr 1), the token’s spot price stabilized in the $0.183 range.
It’s difficult to overstate how devastating Italy’s defeat has been to Italian sports fans. Manager Gennaro Gattuso perhaps echoed the sentiment of his countrymen when he said he “would have given up years of my life, money, for us to achieve our goal.”
Prize money for this year’s World Cup is up by 50% compared to 2022, with an overall prize pot of $727 million and the winners set to pocket $50 million.
What Next for $ITA?
For Fan Token traders, attention will likely turn to this weekend’s return of club football and the assets of national teams already qualified. Indeed, many of the latter are in the green today. But what about $ITA’s prospects of a rebound?
La Nazionale’s next goal will be to make it to Euro 2028, though the qualifying campaign doesn’t kick off until March 2027. The qualifying group stage draw takes place this December, though Italy will return to action in September in the Nations League.
In the absence of meaningful fixtures in the short term, interest in $ITA may wane, although the nature of its abject performance since yesterday gives rise to the possibility of a rebound. A possibility unlikely to assuage the misery of diehard Italian fans today.
